| 1 DETENTION OFFICER FIRED, ARRESTED; ANOTHER FIRED IN JAIL CONTRABAND SCHEME |
|
In a continuing investigation of inmates receiving contraband at the DeKalb County Jail, Sheriff’s Office authorities arrested and terminated the employment of Detention Officer Shelton Nesbitt Friday, January 26, 2007, and today fired Detention Officer Shomari Sinclair.
Nesbitt, 35 years old, faces felony charges of Giving Inmates Items without Consent of Authority [§42-5-18] and Violation of Oath [§16-10-1]. Items allegedly included marijuana, cigarettes, cellular phone batteries, glue and air freshener products. A Magistrate Court judge set bond today at $2,500.00. Shelton was hired August 27, 2005.
Authorities cited 24-year-old Sinclair with violation of Sheriff’s Office policies addressing Neglect of Duty (Policy 4-1, Section 2) and Withholding Information on Criminal Activity (Policy 4-1, Section 25). Sinclair was hired March 27, 2006.
“I will continue to reiterate to my staff that this administration has zero tolerance for corruption by public officers and any employees of this agency. While I am disappointed in the actions of a few, I am proud and honored by the service of the 99.5 percent of our employees who continue to perform with integrity,” Sheriff Thomas E. Brown said.
As a result of an earlier phase of the Sheriff’s Office of Professional Standards (OPS) investigation, Sheriff Brown announced last week the arrest and termination of former Detention Officer Raymond Green, 28 years old.
OPS investigators arrested Green January 19, 2007, for allegedly supplying marijuana, ecstasy pills, and tobacco to a jail inmate. He was released on $2,000 bond on the day of his arrest.
