2 ARRESTED AS JAIL CONTRABAND SUPPLIERS

SHERIFF ARRESTS 2 PEOPLE FOR SUPPLYING CONTRABAND TO JAIL INMATES The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office on June 8 and 9, 2006, arrested two persons for supplying contraband to jail inmates and for use of a cell phone or telephone to facilitate illegal activity. George Alleyne, 26, of Lithonia and Decatur resident Amandy Figures, 27, face felony charges of Giving Weapons, Intoxicants, Drugs and Other Items to Inmates (in violation of §O.C.G.A. 42.5.18) and Use of Communications Facilities to Violate Provisions Prohibited (in violation of §O.C.G.A. 16.13.32.3). At the time of his arrest, Alleyne worked in the jail’s kitchen as an employee of the jail’s food services contractor. According to Sheriff’s Office of Professional Standards (OPS) investigators, Figures’ initial jail contact was an associate, 26-year-old jail inmate Angel Ortiz. Ortiz has been incarcerated since January 25, 2006, for probation violation and, with trusty status, also worked in the kitchen. Allegedly, Ortiz orchestrated the initial contact between Alleyne and Figures, making it possible for Figures to provide marijuana and tobacco to Alleyne. Based on findings of the investigation, Figures enlisted Alleyne to smuggle the contraband into the jail, and Ortiz delivered the items in food/drink containers to inmates. Figures appeared in court Saturday, June 10, 2006, and was released on a signature bond. Alleyne appeared in Magistrate Court today at 1:15 p.m. His bond was set at $5,000. Ortiz remains in jail with trusty status revoked. The Office of Professional Standards is continuing the investigation. ###
