SHERIFF ARRESTS DETENTION OFFICER

DETENTION OFFICER ARRESTED FOR SUPPLYING CONTRABAND TO INMATES DECATUR, Ga. – The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office this afternoon arrested one of its own detention officers for allegedly supplying contraband to jail inmates. Detention Officer Jimmy Lee Butler, Jr., a 29-years-old Stone Mountain resident, allegedly brought into the jail intoxicants, drugs, tobacco products, food items not sold in the inmate commissary, and other articles for use by inmates. These acts violate Georgia Code §42-5-18(a)*, which is a felony offense punishable by imprisonment for not less than one nor more than five years if the person is convicted. The arrest follows a two-week investigation by the Sheriff’s Office of Professional Standards (OPS) during which inmate witnesses and employees were interviewed. The investigation continues by OPS. Butler, who was hired by the Sheriff’s Office in November 2003, is being held in another Atlanta-area jail.
