VEHICLES DONATED TO ORLEANS PARISH SHERIFF

DEKALB COUNTY TO DONATE FOUR SURPLUS VEHICLES TO ORLEANS PARISH, LA, SHERIFF’S OFFICE Decatur, GA – DeKalb County Sheriff Thomas Brown has requested the donation of four surplus law enforcement vehicles to the Orleans Parish, LA, Criminal Sheriff’s Office; and Chief Executive Officer Vernon Jones and the board of commissioners approved the request during the September 27, 2005, board meeting. “I am glad DeKalb County is able to help again by providing badly needed resources to this devastated area,” CEO Jones said. During a recent trip to the New Orleans area, Sheriff Brown met with Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff Marlin Gusman. He found that flooding during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina destroyed a significant number of the vehicles needed for operation. Orleans Parish under normal operating circumstances houses approximately 12,000 inmates at 10 facilities. All inmates were evacuated by boat and transported to several State facilities by bus as a result of devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. Sheriff Gusman has since set up operation in a Greyhound bus station, with administrative offices moved temporarily to a location in Baton Rouge. “I am extremely grateful to CEO Jones for presenting my request to the board of commissioners for action and for the prompt response from the commissioners,” Sheriff Brown said. “Their immediate action will bring much needed assistance to the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office.” Without a suitable jail facility, new arrestees are transported to several other detention facilities across the state. These vehicles will help them to get the job done, Sheriff Brown said. The four police vehicles – 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2001 Crown Victorias -- have logged an average of 100,000 miles each and had been inventoried for sale during the county’s surplus equipment auction on Saturday, October 1, 2005. Surplus vehicle sales typically range from $2,000 to $5,000 per unit.
