| FORMER DETENTION OFFICER ARRESTED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT ON INMATE |
|
DECATUR, Ga. – Anthony Abdussalaam, 38, a former DeKalb County Jail detention officer and an Atlanta resident, was arrested March 21, 2005, at (time) for sexual assault/felony of a 28-year-old female inmate. A criminal arrest warrant was issued for his arrest on March 19, 2005, and he turned himself in at the DeKalb County Jail in compliance with a deadline set by the police.
Based on investigative reports and as confirmed by the victim, the relationship was consensual; however, Georgia law (§16-6-5.1) prohibits such relationships with persons in custody: “A person commits sexual assault when such person has supervisory or disciplinary authority over another person and such person engages in sexual contact with that person . . . .”
The arrest followed an initial internal investigation by DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office of Professional Standards (OPS) investigators, who subsequently referred the case to the DeKalb County Police Department for criminal investigation. Abdussalaam is housed in a metropolitan Atlanta-area jail. A bond hearing has been tentatively set for Tuesday, March 22, 2005 at 1 p.m. in DeKalb County Magistrate Court.
Abdussalaam was terminated from his position as a detention officer on February 19, 2005, on unrelated charges.
