OUR HOUSE CHILDREN’S SHELTER BENEFITS

Decatur, Ga. – Our House, a childcare and educational support center for homeless families, received a $1,000 donation from Sheriff Thomas E. Brown Thursday, June 2, 2005. Brown and volunteers raised the funds during his Annual Bar-B-Que and Low Country Boil on May 12, 2005, at the New Life Community Center on Flat Shoals Road. “I support Our House because of its mission of service to families who are burdened by being homeless and jobless. Our House relieves some of the stress from parents who must leave their children to go out to seek work, because they know that their children are safe and sheltered during those hours. They receive quality care as well as early childhood education experiences,” Sheriff Brown said. I decided last year to contribute annually to the shelter after being inspired by the community spirit and volunteer efforts of Sheriff’s Office employees who have supported the shelter by providing canned foods, toys and other gifts, Brown said. Brown contributed $1,500 from the 2004 “Bar-B-Que and Low Country Boil” event. Our House offers up to one year of free childcare to homeless families and serves up to 50 children from two months to five years old. Licensed by the Georgia Office of School Readiness, the facility has a full-time staff that includes a family advocate, trained teachers, parent interns, a program coordinator, and an executive director. The organization also helps parents obtain housing and jobs, and provides job training, counseling, advocacy and transportation assistance. The staff relies on more than 65 hands-on volunteers each year. For more information, to volunteer, or to provide other assistance at Our House, visit www.ourhousega.com or call (404) 378-0938.
