| SHERIFF PRESENTS $2,500 CHECK TO SLAIN POLICE OFFICER'S WIFE |
|
DECATUR, Ga. – Sheriff Thomas E. Brown today presented a $2,500 check to Mrs. Laura Ortega, wife of slain Pine Lake Police Officer Francis Ortega. The donation was made on behalf of the Georgia Sheriff’s Association.
“The Sheriff’s Association responded immediately to my request for assistance to the Ortega family,” Sheriff Brown said. “This is a most difficult time for the family, and the entire law enforcement community is standing by to assist in any way that we can.”
Officer Ortega, 25, suffered fatal gunshot wounds on Aug. 11, 2005, during a traffic stop that resulted in gunfire at 4567 Rockbridge Road in front of the Pine Lake Post Office. The suspect in the shooting also succumbed to an apparent gunshot wound.
“The sheriffs of the state of Georgia recognize the danger that all law enforcement officers face on a daily basis in the line of duty, as well as the financial burden placed on the loved ones left behind when the ultimate sacrifice is made,” Sheriff Brown says. “We hope that his contribution will make a difference in some way to Officer Ortega’s family.”
