EDITORIAL: ATTORNEYS' RECALL EFFORTS SHORTSIGHTED

Clearly, emotions are still high after the Fulton County Courthouse shootings, as evidenced by efforts of a group of well-respected attorneys to recall Sheriff Myron Freeman. However, their actions are misguided and shortsighted. As a member of the task force appointed by Sheriff Freeman to investigate the events of March 11, 2005, I oppose any actions, such as the recall efforts, that send the message that rash decisions, or decisions without the benefit of a thorough investigation, are acceptable. The task force has reached the point where we can provide information on which the sheriff can make informed, fair, and unquestionable decisions based on documented evidence and findings, rather than on the emotions of anyone involved. Like any responsible manager, Sheriff Freeman (through the investigative commission) is carefully assessing the organizational processes and the facts of the courthouse shootings to make corrections. He, subsequently, will make difficult decisions that will affect the lives and livelihood of some of his employees and their families. Toward this end, he challenged the commission to move forward without concern for what the findings might mean to him personally; saying what is more important is to have the thoroughly investigated and objective rulings of the commission. The people of Fulton County elected Myron Freeman. The attorneys offering pro bono service in the recall effort have yet to identify the deputies or other individuals represented in the matter. Neither have they answered questions regarding the number of “complainants.” For me, this raises questions of credibility and motive. The same people who cast their ballots have the constitutional right and the opportunity to re-elect or un-elect the sheriff should he choose to run in 2008. The people should be given that chance, not a group of disgruntled deputies who may have been part of the systemic problems perpetuated over the years and who are an albatross to Sheriff Freeman’s commitment to move the organization forward.
