| JUDGE TERMINATES COURT-ORDERED MONITERING OF JAIL MEDICAL UNIT |
|
DECATUR, Ga.– Superior Court Judge Gregory Adams on September 2, 2005, ruled Sheriff Thomas Brown and the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office are relieved of court-ordered monitoring of the Jail’s inmate medical care unit “effective immediately.”
“Reaching full compliance to the provisions set forth in the 1998 inmate lawsuit, Adams v. Dorsey, has been the most challenging issue inherited by this administration,” Sheriff Brown said. “With this accomplishment I feel emancipated. After five years DeKalb County now has one Sheriff.”
Judge Adams states in the court order:
“This court, having considered the evidence and oral argument, finds that the DeKalb County Sheriff is in substantial compliance with the terms and conditions of the Settlement Agreement . . . . There has been significant improvement in the standard of health care provided at the DeKalb County Jail since commencement of this lawsuit in 1998. All evidence in this case leads the Court to conclude that the goals and purpose underlying the Settlement Agreement have been essentially met and that Sheriff Thomas Brown and his staff have put systems in place that will provide adequate medical care for the more than 80,000 inmates that visit the Jail each year. Accordingly, the Court GRANTS the Motion to Terminate Court-Ordered Monitoring.”
Sheriff Brown said that this feat has truly been a team effort on the part of all the men and women who have worked with dedication and professionalism to help us to meet all the terms of the Adams v. Dorsey settlement agreement. He credits the agency’s employees as well as the management and staffs of Correctional Medical Services, the contracted medical services vendor, and Trinity Foods, the food services vendor, which has mastered providing meals to inmates requiring special diets.
